AWS set-up, migration and cost control for businesses without a cloud team

We set up AWS accounts properly, move applications onto them, write the infrastructure as code, and keep security and the monthly bill under control, all inside your own AWS organisation.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is the largest public cloud platform: hundreds of services for computing, storage, databases, networking and machine learning, rented by the hour or by the request. That breadth is the problem for most small and mid-sized businesses. It is easy to start, easy to leave insecure, and easy to overspend on. Meritbyte Technologies is a Nepal-based cloud and software company that sets up, migrates and runs AWS environments for clients in Nepal, the USA, Australia, Canada and the UK, inside the client's own AWS account.

What AWS work do we do?

Most AWS engagements are one of these:

  • Set-up done properly. A new AWS organisation with separate accounts for production, staging and shared services, single sign-on, multi-factor authentication, audit logging and billing alerts, before anything is deployed.
  • Migration. Moving a website or application off shared hosting, a single overloaded server or another cloud, with a tested rollback plan.
  • Modernisation. Turning hand-built servers into containers or serverless functions defined in code, so environments can be rebuilt in minutes.
  • Cost control. Finding what is oversized, idle or forgotten, and committing to savings plans only once usage is steady.
  • Run and support. Monitoring, patching, backups and on-call cover under our managed IT and cloud and DevOps services.

The AWS building blocks we use most

AWS has a service for nearly everything; good architecture uses few of them. Our usual toolkit:

NeedAWS services
Run applicationsECS on Fargate for containers, Lambda for event-driven functions, EC2 when a server is genuinely needed
Store dataRDS or Aurora for PostgreSQL, S3 for files, DynamoDB for specific high-scale patterns
Deliver fastCloudFront as the CDN, Route 53 for DNS, Certificate Manager for TLS
Stay secureIAM Identity Center, Organizations, CloudTrail, GuardDuty, KMS, Secrets Manager
RecoverAWS Backup with cross-region copies, tested restores
WatchCloudWatch metrics, logs and alarms, with alerts to the people on call

Everything is written as infrastructure as code, usually in Terraform, so changes are reviewed like application code and environments can be recreated exactly.

Choosing a region

Region choice affects speed, cost and compliance. Customers in Nepal and South Asia are usually served from the Asia Pacific (Mumbai) region. Data that must stay in a country goes to a region there: Sydney or Melbourne for Australian data, Canada (Central) for Canadian data, London for UK data. We document the reasoning in the architecture notes, alongside any privacy law it serves.

Security on AWS

AWS uses a shared responsibility model: AWS secures the data centres and underlying services; you secure what you build and who can access it. Most cloud breaches come from the customer side, such as public storage buckets, long-lived access keys and over-broad permissions. Our baseline for every account:

  1. Single sign-on and multi-factor authentication; no shared root logins.
  2. Least-privilege roles, reviewed whenever someone joins or leaves.
  3. Audit logging switched on organisation-wide and kept in a separate account.
  4. Encryption at rest and in transit by default.
  5. Backups copied to another region, with a restore tested every quarter.

AWS, Azure or Google Cloud?

AWS has the broadest service catalogue. Azure suits organisations already running Microsoft 365 and Active Directory. Google Cloud is strong in data analytics and simple pricing for some workloads. We work on all three and recommend based on your existing tools and team, not habit. Our comparison of AWS vs Azure vs Google Cloud explains the differences.

How an AWS engagement runs with us

  1. Free scoping call, then a written scope, timeline and number.
  2. Fixed-price first milestone, typically an architecture document and a secured landing zone, or a migration plan with a tested rollback.
  3. Two-week blocks with a demo of what changed; you can stop after any block.
  4. Handover of Terraform code, runbooks and access, or ongoing support on a retainer.

Frequently asked questions

What do AWS consulting services include?

AWS consulting usually covers account and security set-up, architecture design, migration of existing applications, infrastructure as code, monitoring and backups, and cost reviews. Meritbyte does this inside the client's own AWS organisation, with Terraform code and runbooks handed over so another team could take it on.

How can we reduce our AWS bill?

Start with visibility: tags, budgets and alerts so you can see who spends what. Then remove idle resources, right-size oversized instances and databases, move suitable workloads to containers or serverless, and set storage lifecycle rules. Commit to savings plans only after usage is steady, because commitments lock in spend.

Is AWS too expensive for a small business website?

For a simple marketing site, often yes. Managed hosting or a platform such as Vercel or Netlify is cheaper and needs less upkeep. AWS earns its cost when you run applications, store sensitive data, need a specific region or expect traffic to grow sharply. We recommend the simpler option when it fits.

Can you migrate our application to AWS without downtime?

Usually with very little. We build the new environment alongside the old one, copy and sync data, test on a staging address, then switch DNS during a quiet period with a tested rollback plan. Most cut-overs cause minutes of disruption or none. The plan states the expected impact before anything moves.

Is Meritbyte an AWS partner?

We do not claim any AWS partner status. We are a software and cloud engineering company that builds and runs workloads on AWS, Azure and Google Cloud. What we offer instead is work you can inspect: Terraform code, architecture notes and runbooks in your own account.
