Website developer
Website developer for New Zealand businesses, working from Nepal
Meritbyte Technologies is a Nepal-based team building websites for New Zealand businesses remotely. Nepal is 6 hours 15 minutes behind New Zealand in winter, so our morning meets your afternoon. The window is short, and we plan the work around it.
The best website developer in New Zealand for a small business understands a small, review-driven market: .nz domains, GST-inclusive pricing, te reo Māori spelled properly with macrons, and privacy and anti-spam laws that apply to businesses of every size. Meritbyte Technologies, a Nepal-based web and software development company, does this work for New Zealand clients remotely. We have no office, staff or legal entity in New Zealand, and the sections below explain what that means day to day.
What makes the best website developer in New Zealand?
Getting the local details right on a modest budget. New Zealand businesses rarely need an enterprise build; they need a site that is correct, quick and easy to edit. Check any developer against these points:
- Macrons that survive. Text stored as UTF-8 end to end, fonts that include ā, ē, ī, ō and ū in every weight you use, and site search that matches "Maori" to "Māori".
- GST-inclusive consumer prices. GST is 15%, and prices shown to consumers include it; B2B price lists say clearly when they do not.
- Privacy Act 2020 basics. A privacy statement, a plan for notifiable breaches and a view on any overseas disclosure.
- UEMA-compliant sign-ups. Consent recorded, sender identified and a working unsubscribe in every message.
- The domain in your name. .nz or .co.nz, registered to your business.
- Local payment options. Stripe or Windcave for cards, PayPal, Afterpay where it suits your products, and bank transfer details for invoices.
- Accounting that connects. Many NZ small businesses run Xero, so invoices, payments and store orders should flow into it rather than being re-keyed.
- An editor you can use yourself. WordPress or Shopify, with a short training session at handover.
Our approach, measured against the list
We start with a free scoping conversation and send back a written scope, a timeline and a number. Beyond a fixed-price first milestone, you buy fortnightly blocks of work, see a demo as each one closes, and are free to walk away at any of those points. A single project manager writes to you weekly, a staging link is always open, and the domain, hosting, code and any ad accounts are registered to your business, with documentation handed over at the end.
How do Nepal and New Zealand hours overlap?
Briefly. Nepal is UTC+5:45 with no daylight saving; New Zealand is UTC+12 (NZST) from early April to late September and UTC+13 (NZDT) from the last Sunday in September to the first Sunday in April. Nepal is therefore 6h15m behind in winter and 7h15m behind in summer.
| Time in New Zealand | Nepal time during NZST | Nepal time during NZDT |
|---|---|---|
| 1:00 p.m. | 6:45 a.m. | 5:45 a.m. |
| 3:00 p.m. | 8:45 a.m. | 7:45 a.m. |
| 5:00 p.m. | 10:45 a.m. | 9:45 a.m. |
That leaves a live window of an hour or two at most, late in your afternoon and early in the Nepal morning. It is enough for a fortnightly demo and a short weekly call, not for all-day chat.
The upside is overnight progress. A Nepal working day from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. runs from 4:15 p.m. to 12:15 a.m. in New Zealand winter time, so feedback you send before you leave work is usually actioned before you open your laptop the next morning. Our guide to working with an offshore team across time zones covers the habits that make this reliable.
Which New Zealand laws affect a business website?
Two Acts cover most of it, and neither has a small-business exemption.
Privacy Act 2020. Its 13 information privacy principles apply to any organisation that holds personal information, whatever its size. Serious privacy breaches, where serious harm is likely, must be notified to the Privacy Commissioner and to affected people. If an overseas developer handles customer data only on your behalf, the Act treats you as still holding it, so you remain responsible for its security; IPP 12 adds further limits when information is disclosed overseas for someone else's use. Working with test data on staging avoids most of the question.
Unsolicited Electronic Messages Act 2007. Commercial emails and texts need consent, accurate sender information and a functional unsubscribe that is honoured within five working days. The Department of Internal Affairs enforces it.
The Fair Trading Act 1986 and the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 also apply to what your site says: prices, claims, and the rights you describe to customers must not mislead them.
How should te reo Māori appear on your website?
Correctly, with macrons, and marked up so assistive technology can read it. Getting this wrong is common and visible, and it undercuts an otherwise careful site.
What a careful build does:
- Chooses fonts with full macron support in every weight and style used, so ā never falls back to a mismatched glyph.
- Stores and exports content as UTF-8, because spreadsheets saved in older Windows encodings are the usual way macrons disappear during product imports.
- Wraps te reo passages with the
milanguage code, so screen readers switch pronunciation. - Decides URL slugs deliberately: macrons in slugs are valid but percent-encoded when copied, so many sites use plain vowels in the URL and macrons on the page.
- Makes site search macron-insensitive, so a visitor typing "Tamaki Makaurau" still finds Tāmaki Makaurau.
Prices, payments and .nz domains
The .nz namespace is administered by InternetNZ. Since 2014 businesses can register directly under .nz as well as under .co.nz, and there is no requirement to be based in New Zealand, which also means competitors and squatters face no barrier to registering names close to yours. Register the variants you care about in your company's name.
Show consumer prices including GST. Windcave, a New Zealand payment provider, and Stripe both handle cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay; PayPal and Afterpay add familiar options for online shoppers. For a shop, NZ Post shipping rates can be pulled into Shopify or WooCommerce at checkout. Our e-commerce development page covers store builds, and the comparison of Shopify vs WooCommerce vs custom e-commerce helps with the platform decision.
Where do New Zealanders search and shop?
Google and Google Maps for services, Trade Me for buying and selling, and trade-specific platforms such as Builderscrack and NoCowboys for finding tradespeople. Many retailers sell on Trade Me and their own store at the same time, so stock and prices need to stay in step.
For a local service business, the Google Business Profile often brings in more enquiries than the website itself; our guide to Google Business Profile optimisation walks through it. Tourism operators in places like Queenstown and Rotorua usually need an online booking tool integrated with the site, and exporters of food, wine or skincare need multi-currency pricing for Australian and Asian buyers. See travel and tourism websites and retail and e-commerce.
If search is your main channel, our SEO services track local rankings against the enquiries they actually produce, and we never pay for links.
Is an offshore developer a sensible choice for a New Zealand business?
For many small businesses after an affordable website, yes, with conditions. The gains are a lower hourly rate than most New Zealand agencies charge and changes made while you sleep. The costs are no in-person meetings, a short live overlap and the need to write requirements down, because a quick question across the counter is not an option.
The conditions: a written scope agreed before work starts, work you can inspect on staging at any time, and every account in your name from day one. Our guide on how to hire a remote web developer lists the questions to ask any offshore supplier. Businesses with operations on both sides of the Tasman can also read our notes for a website developer in Australia. For a design-led small-business site, start with our website design service.
Frequently asked questions
Can you build a bilingual English and te reo Māori website?
Yes, technically: separate language versions, correct macrons, language markup for screen readers and a language switcher. The translation itself should be done or reviewed by a fluent speaker who understands your field; we build the structure and publish the content, but we would not ask you to rely on us for the quality of the reo.
Is my small business exempt from the Privacy Act?
No. Unlike Australia's Privacy Act, New Zealand's Privacy Act 2020 has no turnover threshold; it applies to sole traders and small companies as well as large ones. For a typical website that means a clear privacy statement, collecting only what you use, keeping it secure and reporting serious breaches to the Privacy Commissioner.
What time of day can we talk?
Your afternoon, our early morning. During NZ winter, 3 p.m. in Auckland is 8:45 a.m. in Nepal; while New Zealand daylight time is in force, it is 7:45 a.m. Demos and calls are booked in that window, and everything else happens through the weekly written update, the staging site and email.
Should I register .nz or .co.nz?
Either works for search; Google treats both as New Zealand domains. .co.nz is still the more familiar choice for businesses, while the shorter .nz is easier to say and type. If budget allows, register both in your business's name and redirect one to the other so nobody else can take the variant.
