Website developer
Website developer for UK businesses, based in Nepal
Meritbyte Technologies is a Nepal-based development team working remotely for UK companies. Nepal is 4 hours 45 minutes ahead of British Summer Time, so your morning overlaps our afternoon and most review cycles close within a working day.
The best website developer in the UK does not have to be in the UK. It has to get PECR cookie consent right, show prices the way consumer law requires, build pages disabled visitors can use, and leave your company owning every account. Meritbyte Technologies builds websites and web software from Nepal for UK businesses; we have no British office or staff, so this page sets out how remote delivery works, including the parts that are harder from a distance.
What makes the best website developer in the UK?
Legal hygiene first, design second. A developer worth hiring will pass all eight of these without being prompted:
- A cookie banner that means it. "Reject all" is as easy to find as "Accept all", and no analytics or advertising cookie loads before the visitor chooses.
- A real privacy notice. Lawful bases, retention periods and any processors outside the UK are named, not copied from a template.
- VAT-inclusive consumer prices, with no mandatory fees revealed only at the last step.
- A compliant checkout. Pre-contract information, the 14-day cancellation right for distance sales, and an order button that makes clear the customer is committing to pay.
- WCAG 2.2 AA with evidence: a test log showing keyboard-only navigation and a screen reader pass on key templates.
- Your .co.uk or .uk, held by your company at a registrar you control.
- Payments in your company's name. Stripe, PayPal or GoCardless, with Strong Customer Authentication handled through 3-D Secure.
- A written quote that lists exclusions, so copywriting, photography and redirects are not surprise extras.
Meritbyte covers points 6 to 8 by default: domains, hosting, code and ad accounts sit in the client's name, and every project starts with a free scoping conversation that produces a written scope, a timeline and a figure, with the first milestone at a fixed price. Points 1 to 5 belong in that written scope for any UK build, whether it is a web development project or an e-commerce store, rather than being left as assumptions.
When can you talk to a developer in Nepal from the UK?
In your morning. Nepal is UTC+5:45 with no daylight saving, so it is 4h45m ahead of British Summer Time (last Sunday in March to last Sunday in October) and 5h45m ahead of GMT for the rest of the year.
| UK time | Nepal time during BST | Nepal time during GMT |
|---|---|---|
| 9:00 a.m. | 1:45 p.m. | 2:45 p.m. |
| 11:00 a.m. | 3:45 p.m. | 4:45 p.m. |
| 12:15 p.m. | 5:00 p.m. | 6:00 p.m. |
| 1:15 p.m. | 6:00 p.m. | 7:00 p.m. |
A Nepal working day ending at 6 p.m. therefore covers the UK morning until 1:15 p.m. in summer and 12:15 p.m. in winter: roughly three to four hours of live overlap. Feedback you send in the afternoon is picked up when Nepal starts work at 10 a.m., which is 5:15 a.m. in London during BST, so many changes are on staging by the time you are back at your desk. Our notes for a web developer in London cover the capital's market specifically.
What do UK GDPR and PECR require from your website?
UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018 govern how you collect and use personal data; the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR) govern cookies and electronic marketing. Most UK sites touch all three.
The practical requirements:
- Lawful basis and notice. Every form has a purpose, a lawful basis and a link to the privacy notice.
- Breach reporting. Notifiable breaches go to the ICO within 72 hours, so you need to know which systems hold which data.
- Cookies. Non-essential cookies need consent under PECR. The Data (Use and Access) Act 2025 relaxes this for some low-risk cookies, such as certain analytics, where visitors are told and can object, and its provisions are coming into force in stages. Check the ICO's current guidance before removing a banner; advertising cookies still need consent.
- Email marketing. Consent, or the soft opt-in for existing customers buying similar products, with an unsubscribe in every message.
- Transfers to Nepal. The UK has no adequacy regulations for Nepal, so if a Nepal-based developer processes your customers' personal data you need the International Data Transfer Agreement (or the UK Addendum to the EU clauses) and a transfer risk assessment. Most projects avoid this by giving developers test data only, which is how we recommend setting it up.
What does UK consumer law mean for prices and checkout?
The standard VAT rate is 20%, and prices shown to consumers must include it. Since April 2025 the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 lets the Competition and Markets Authority fine businesses directly for consumer law breaches, and it bans fake reviews and drip pricing, where mandatory charges appear only late in checkout.
For an online shop, the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 add a 14-day cancellation period for most distance sales, pre-contract information such as total cost and delivery charges, and an order button labelled so the customer knows they are agreeing to pay. B2B price lists can show prices ex-VAT if that is clearly stated.
Is website accessibility a legal requirement in the UK?
For private businesses, indirectly: the Equality Act 2010 requires service providers to make reasonable adjustments for disabled people, and that duty reaches websites. Public sector bodies have a specific duty under the 2018 accessibility regulations, now checked against WCAG 2.2 AA.
No private-sector rule names a WCAG version, so WCAG 2.2 AA is the sensible target. A build to that standard covers colour contrast, keyboard access, form labels, captions and focus order, and ships with an accessibility statement explaining how to report problems.
.co.uk domains, sterling and UK payments
Nominet runs the .uk registry; .co.uk remains the default choice for UK businesses, with the shorter .uk also available. Register it to your company, not to a person or a developer.
For payments, Stripe and PayPal cover cards and wallets, GoCardless handles Direct Debit for subscriptions and retainers, and Klarna or Clearpay add pay-later options for retail. Open Banking pay-by-bank is increasingly offered for larger payments. If you are VAT-registered, services bought from an overseas supplier are normally accounted for under the reverse charge; your accountant will confirm.
Should you hire a UK agency or a remote team?
It depends on how you like to work. A remote team saves money per hour; a local agency saves you writing things down.
| Factor | UK agency | Nepal-based team |
|---|---|---|
| Hourly or day rate | Higher, especially in London | Lower |
| Meetings | In person if you want them | Video calls only |
| Live overlap | Full working day | UK mornings, roughly three to four hours |
| Specs | Can stay informal | Must be written and agreed |
| Personal data | Stays in the UK | Test data, or a transfer agreement |
| Progress outside UK hours | Rare | Changes often ready by the next morning |
We close the gaps with two-week blocks that each end with a demo, one project manager, a written update every week and a staging URL you can open whenever you want; you can stop at the end of any block. For typical market ranges, see website cost in the UK; for choosing between supplier types, freelancer vs web development agency and offshore vs nearshore vs onshore development.
Frequently asked questions
Can a developer outside the UK handle UK GDPR properly?
Yes. As the controller, your business remains responsible, and the developer acts as your processor under a written contract. The simplest arrangement keeps real customer data in the UK and gives developers anonymised or test data. Where genuine access is unavoidable, use the International Data Transfer Agreement and a transfer risk assessment.
Do I still need a cookie banner if I only use analytics?
For now, usually yes. The Data (Use and Access) Act 2025 introduces exemptions for some low-risk analytics cookies, but they come with conditions and are being brought into force in stages. Check the ICO's current guidance for your setup before removing consent, and keep a banner for any advertising or social media tracking.
What time will our calls be?
In your morning. A 10 a.m. call in London is 2:45 p.m. in Nepal during British Summer Time and 3:45 p.m. in winter. Nepal's working day ends at 1:15 p.m. UK time in summer and 12:15 p.m. in winter, so we book demos and planning calls before lunch.
Is a cheaper remote developer a false economy?
It can be if the brief is vague, nobody reviews the work, or accounts end up in the developer's name. It is not when the scope is written, work is shown every two weeks on staging, and your company owns everything from day one. Comparing web development quotes line by line exposes most of the risk.
