AWS vs Azure vs Google Cloud for Small and Mid-Size Companies

AWS vs Azure vs Google Cloud for small and mid-size companies: core services, startup credits, managed databases, regions, support and skills compared.

Key takeaways

  • Pick the cloud that matches what your team and existing software already use; the real switching costs are skills and identity, not servers.
  • Compare the managed services you will actually rely on (databases, containers, identity), not headline virtual machine prices.
  • All three run startup credit programs; eligibility and amounts change, so check the official pages or your accelerator.
  • Check regions for data residency and latency before anything else if your customers or regulators care where data lives.
  • For a simple website or small web app, a managed hosting platform may be cheaper and easier than any of the three.

AWS vs Azure vs Google Cloud is rarely decided by features for a small or mid-size company, because all three can run anything a typical business needs. The deciding factors are the tools you already use (Microsoft 365 and Entra ID point toward Azure; Google Workspace and BigQuery toward Google Cloud), the skills of whoever will run it, the managed services you will depend on, and support. AWS remains the largest provider, with the broadest catalog and the most engineers who know it.

Which is the best cloud provider for a small business?

The one your team can operate well and that fits the software you already pay for. This quick guide covers most cases:

If you...Lean towardWhy
Run Microsoft 365, Entra ID, Windows Server, SQL Server or .NETAzureIdentity, licensing and tooling line up with what you have
Are analytics-heavy, or want managed Kubernetes with little overheadGoogle CloudBigQuery and GKE are its strongest products
Want the widest service catalog, third-party integrations and hiring poolAWSThe default for many software teams and tools
Run one website or a small web appPossibly none of themVercel, Netlify, Render, DigitalOcean or managed WordPress hosting can be simpler

The last row matters more than it looks. A hyperscale cloud gives you building blocks, and someone has to assemble, secure and watch them. For a brochure site or a single small app, a managed platform often costs less once you count that time.

AWS vs Azure vs Google Cloud: how do the core services compare?

Nearly every service has an equivalent on each cloud; the names differ more than the capabilities.

Terraform works across all three, which is useful even if you never move: your infrastructure is written down, reviewed and reproducible. It does not make you portable by itself, because the resources it describes are still provider-specific.

How do the managed databases compare?

All three run managed PostgreSQL and MySQL; the differences lie in their premium engines, SQL Server support and serverless options.

  • AWS: RDS for PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, SQL Server and Oracle; Aurora, its PostgreSQL- and MySQL-compatible engine; DynamoDB for key-value workloads.
  • Azure: Azure SQL Database and SQL Managed Instance, the natural home for SQL Server workloads; Azure Database for PostgreSQL and for MySQL; Cosmos DB.
  • Google Cloud: Cloud SQL for PostgreSQL, MySQL and SQL Server; AlloyDB, a PostgreSQL-compatible engine; Spanner and Firestore.

For most small and mid-size businesses, plain managed PostgreSQL is the right default on any of the three. Backups, point-in-time recovery and patching are handled, and the data moves easily if you ever change provider. The premium engines solve scale problems you may never have, and tie you more closely to one cloud.

How does a cloud cost comparison actually work?

List prices for comparable virtual machines and storage are close enough that they rarely decide the choice. The bill is driven by your architecture, commitment discounts, licensing, data transfer and resources nobody switched off. Prices change often, so we do not quote them here.

  • Commitment discounts: AWS Savings Plans and Reserved Instances, Azure reservations and savings plans, and Google Cloud committed use discounts. Google also applies sustained use discounts automatically to some machine types.
  • Licensing: Azure Hybrid Benefit lets eligible Windows Server and SQL Server licenses be reused on Azure, which often tips the numbers for Microsoft-based businesses.
  • Data transfer out: sending data to the internet costs money on all three, so download-heavy sites need a CDN. In 2024 all three announced they would waive egress fees for customers moving their data out to leave, subject to conditions.
  • Managed services versus staff time: a managed database costs more than a database on a virtual machine and saves hours of patching and backup work every month.
  • Idle resources: test environments running all weekend, unattached disks and old snapshots are the most common waste.

Price your real architecture in the official AWS, Azure and Google Cloud pricing calculators, with the discounts you would realistically commit to, and set budgets and alerts on the first day.

What startup credits and free tiers are available?

All three run startup programs that give cloud credits, with larger amounts for funded startups or those in partner accelerators. Terms change often, so read the current official pages.

  • AWS Activate: credits and technical resources, with higher tiers through approved accelerators and investors.
  • Microsoft for Startups: Azure credits plus access to Microsoft developer tools, with more for investor-backed companies.
  • Google for Startups Cloud Program: credits, with extra support for AI-focused startups.

Each provider also offers a free tier or trial credit for new accounts. Three cautions for cloud hosting for startups: credits expire; they do not cover everything, such as some marketplace purchases; and an architecture designed to burn credits can be expensive once they run out. Estimate the bill after the credits before you commit to a design.

Where are the cloud regions?

All three operate regions across North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific and the Middle East, but coverage differs by country, and not every service is available in every region.

  • South Asia: there is no hyperscale region in Nepal. The nearest options are the providers' Indian regions, such as Mumbai on all three, and Singapore; businesses serving Nepali users typically test latency from both. Our Nepal page covers the local side of building for that market.
  • Australia: all three have regions in Sydney and Melbourne, which matters for businesses with Privacy Act obligations and customers who ask where data is stored; see our Australia page.
  • UAE: AWS and Azure both run in-country regions; check Google Cloud's current region list if in-country hosting is a requirement.
  • Canada and the UK: all three have in-country regions.

Newer AI models often reach US regions before others, so check availability in your region before designing around a specific model.

How do support and skills availability compare?

Free support on all three covers billing and account questions. Technical help costs extra, and for many small companies a partner is the practical route.

Paid support is sold in tiers, some priced as a flat monthly fee and some as a percentage of monthly spend with a minimum, and response-time targets improve with each tier. Many small businesses buy through a partner or reseller instead; for Azure, Microsoft's Cloud Solution Provider program is the common route, with the partner providing first-line support.

Skills matter as much as services. AWS experience is the most widespread among cloud engineers. Azure skills overlap with traditional Microsoft administration, so an in-house IT person who manages Microsoft 365 already knows Entra ID. Google Cloud specialists are fewer but often strong in data and Kubernetes. Before choosing, check who you can realistically hire or contract.

How do you decide in one afternoon?

  1. List what you already pay for: Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace, SQL Server or Windows licenses, existing hosting.
  2. Name the three managed services you will depend on most, such as the database, containers and identity.
  3. Confirm the region you need for latency and data residency.
  4. Price your real architecture in each calculator, with realistic commitment discounts.
  5. Check your eligibility for startup credits.
  6. Decide who operates it: in-house staff, a partner or a managed service.
  7. Write the setup in Terraform so it is documented and reproducible from day one.

If the move involves an older application, read our guide to legacy system modernization first: moving it unchanged to the cloud is a change of hosting, not a modernization.

How Meritbyte Technologies works with cloud clients

Meritbyte Technologies is a Nepal-based web and software development company whose cloud and DevOps practice works on AWS, Azure and Google Cloud with Terraform, Docker and Kubernetes. We recommend the provider that fits your existing tools and team, and we will say when a simpler hosting platform is enough.

Cloud accounts, billing and root credentials are in your name, the infrastructure code lives in your repository, and documentation comes at handover, so nothing breaks if you move to another firm. For ongoing monitoring, patching and support, see our managed IT services.

Frequently asked questions

Which cloud is cheapest for a small business?

None of them consistently. Comparable virtual machines and storage are priced closely enough that architecture, commitment discounts, data transfer and idle resources matter far more. Microsoft-licensed workloads often cost less on Azure because of Azure Hybrid Benefit. For a simple website, a managed hosting platform is usually cheaper than any hyperscaler once you count the time to run it.

Can we use more than one cloud?

You can, and many companies already do by accident, with email on Microsoft, analytics in BigQuery and applications on AWS. Running the same application across several clouds on purpose roughly doubles the operational work and rarely pays off for a small team. Choose one primary cloud, keep data portable with standard databases, and use Terraform.

Is AWS harder to learn than Azure or Google Cloud?

AWS has the most services, which can feel overwhelming, but also the most tutorials, courses and community answers. Azure feels familiar to anyone who already manages Microsoft 365 and Windows. Google Cloud's console is often described as simpler to find your way around. For a small team, the easiest cloud is the one with good documentation for your specific stack.

Where should a business in Nepal host its application?

There is no hyperscale cloud region in Nepal, so the nearest AWS, Azure and Google Cloud options are Indian regions such as Mumbai, or Singapore. Choose based on where your users are, any data residency requirements from your sector or clients, and latency tests from Nepali networks. A CDN in front of the site helps with static content either way.
