Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of writing and structuring pages so that systems which answer questions directly, such as Google's AI Overviews and featured snippets, ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot and voice assistants, can find a clear answer on your page and cite it. There is no separate algorithm to game. Google says its AI features need no special optimization beyond a page being indexed and eligible to show a snippet; what AEO adds is discipline about how each answer is written, marked up and measured.
What is AEO, and how is it different from SEO?
AEO is SEO applied to the passage rather than the page. Traditional SEO asks whether a page ranks for a query; AEO asks whether a specific paragraph on that page is the best, most quotable answer to a specific question.
| Traditional SEO | Answer engine optimization | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | A ranked link that earns a click | A quoted or cited answer, often with a link |
| Unit that competes | The whole page | A passage, list or table within the page |
| Typical formats | Blue links, map pack | Featured snippets, AI Overviews, AI Mode, chat answers, voice |
| Main measures | Rankings, clicks, conversions | Citations, mentions, question-query impressions, assisted leads |
| Shared foundations | Crawling, indexing, links, reputation | The same |
Treating AEO vs SEO as a choice misses how these systems work. AI Overviews and AI Mode are built on Google's search index, and Google has described AI Mode running many related searches at once (a "query fan-out") to assemble an answer. Pages that already rank for the sub-questions form the pool the answer is drawn from.
Where do answer engines get their answers?
Most of them search an index at the moment a question is asked, read a handful of pages and summarize what they find.
- Google shows featured snippets, "People also ask" boxes, AI Overviews (launched in the US in May 2024 and since expanded to many countries) and AI Mode, all drawing on Google's index.
- Microsoft Copilot and Bing's answers draw on Bing's index, which is one reason to verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools.
- ChatGPT search and Perplexity run their own crawlers and fetch pages live, then cite the sources they used.
- Voice assistants read out one answer, which leaves no room for a second-best page.
The common requirement is that your page can be crawled, indexed and read as plain HTML text. Brand-level work, such as AI crawler access, third-party mentions and entity consistency, is covered in our companion guide to generative engine optimization.
How do you write a page that answer engines can quote?
Write every important answer so it would still make sense if it were the only thing a reader saw.
- Answer first. The first two or three sentences answer the title question. No history, no "great question".
- Use question headings in the words customers use ("How much does a call-out cost?"), with a direct one- or two-sentence answer immediately below, then the detail.
- Make passages self-contained. Name the subject instead of writing "it", and include the unit, place and date: "in 2026", "in Ontario", "per month".
- Define terms plainly. "X is ..." sentences are easy to extract and hard to misread.
- Use lists for steps and tables for comparisons. Answer engines lift these structures well, and readers skim them.
- Be specific and checkable. Real thresholds, named laws and price ranges with the reasons they vary beat vague reassurance.
- Give each question one home. Two pages answering the same question compete with each other; merge them.
- Show who wrote it and when. A visible author, a published date and an updated date signal that someone stands behind the answer.
Here is the difference in practice, using a fictional plumbing company:
Before: "At Smith Plumbing we pride ourselves on transparent, competitive pricing tailored to every job." After: "Yes, we charge a call-out fee: $90 on weekdays, covering the first 30 minutes on site, and it is waived if you accept the quote."
The second version answers "Do you charge a call-out fee?" in one sentence. It can be quoted, it can be checked, and it tells a customer what to expect.
Which structured data helps AEO?
Structured data does not guarantee a citation, but it removes ambiguity about who you are and what each page contains. The types worth adding first:
- Organization: legal or trading name, logo, website and
sameAslinks to your official profiles. - LocalBusiness (or a specific subtype): address, phone and opening hours for businesses customers visit or call.
- Article: headline, author,
datePublishedanddateModifiedon guides and posts. - BreadcrumbList: where the page sits in the site.
- FAQPage: the question-and-answer pairs that are visible on the page.
In August 2023 Google limited FAQ rich results to well-known, authoritative government and health websites, so most businesses no longer get the expandable questions in search results. The FAQ content itself still earns its place: answer engines read the visible questions and answers, and FAQPage markup remains valid schema.org. Whatever you mark up must match what visitors can see. Our guide to schema markup for small businesses goes type by type.
How do you optimize for Google AI Overviews?
The same way you earn a featured snippet. Google's documentation says a page must be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet to be shown as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and that no additional technical requirements apply.
- Check key pages with the URL Inspection tool in Search Console to confirm they are indexed; our technical SEO audit checklist covers the common indexing problems.
- Make sure the answer is in the HTML as text, not only inside an image, a video or a script that loads later.
- Do not apply
nosnippetto pages you want cited. Thenosnippet,data-nosnippetandmax-snippetcontrols limit how your content appears in AI features, andnoindexremoves the page altogether. - Know that the
Google-Extendedrobots.txt token controls use of content for Gemini training and grounding; it does not remove you from Search or AI Overviews. - Keep pages fast and usable on a phone, because people who click through from an AI answer judge you on the page they land on.
How do you measure answer engine optimization?
No single report shows AEO results, so combine four sources.
- Question queries in Search Console. In the Performance report, filter queries with a custom regex such as
^(what|how|why|when|which|who|can|does|is|should)\bto see impressions and clicks for questions. Search Console counts traffic from AI features within its normal web search totals, without a separate filter. - Snippet ownership. Rank-tracking tools show which queries show a featured snippet or "People also ask" box and whether your page holds it.
- AI referrals in analytics. Visits from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, copilot.microsoft.com and gemini.google.com appear as referrals in GA4; the GEO guide explains how to group them into one channel.
- Ask your leads. Add "AI assistant (ChatGPT, Gemini, etc.)" as an option in "How did you hear about us?". It catches the many AI-influenced visits that arrive with no referrer.
What AEO cannot do
AEO cannot promise a citation. AI answers vary between users, locations and even repeated runs of the same question, and no provider publishes a list of ranking factors for them.
Some questions will be answered without a click at all. That is acceptable for simple facts, so put the most effort into questions where the next step needs you: a quote, a booking, a diagnosis, a comparison with your specific offer.
Avoid shortcuts. Publishing hundreds of thin question-and-answer pages to catch every phrasing falls under Google's scaled content abuse spam policy, introduced in March 2024, and does nothing for trust.
How Meritbyte Technologies approaches AEO
Meritbyte Technologies is a Nepal-based web and software development company, and AEO is part of how we deliver SEO services rather than a separate package. The work usually starts with a crawl and indexing check, then rewrites of the pages that matter most for revenue into answer-first structure, then structured data generated from the same content editors maintain.
We report question-query impressions, AI referrals and citations next to leads and revenue, in a written update every week. We do not buy links and we do not promise placements in AI answers, because nobody can honestly promise them. Clients work with us from Nepal and remotely from markets such as Canada.
Frequently asked questions
Is AEO replacing SEO?
No. Answer engines mostly draw on search indexes, so a page that cannot be crawled, indexed or trusted will not be cited either. AEO is a layer on top of SEO: it changes how answers are written, structured and measured. Businesses that drop SEO basics to chase AI visibility usually lose both.
Does FAQ schema still help in 2026?
It no longer produces FAQ rich results for most sites, because Google limited them to authoritative government and health websites in 2023. It is still valid markup, it describes visible questions and answers clearly to any system that reads it, and it does no harm when it matches the page. The visible FAQ content matters more than the markup.
How long does AEO take to show results?
Changes to existing pages that already rank can show up in featured snippets or AI citations within weeks of being recrawled. New pages take as long as any new content takes to rank, often months. Because AI answers vary between runs, judge progress over several months of question-query impressions and leads, not individual screenshots.
Can small businesses compete in AI answers?
Yes, particularly for specific, local or niche questions where large publishers have no detailed answer. A small business that states its prices, service areas, process and policies plainly often gives the most quotable answer available. Broad, generic questions are dominated by large sites, so focus on the questions only you can answer well.
