Companies outsource software development to Nepal for three practical reasons: rates well below those in the US, UK and Australia; engineers who work in English on mainstream stacks such as TypeScript, React, Node.js, Python, .NET and Flutter; and a time zone, UTC+5:45 with no daylight saving, that overlaps with working hours in Europe, the Gulf and Australia and hands work off overnight to North America. The risks are the familiar offshore ones, such as the wrong people on your project, unclear ownership of code and polite silence about problems, and each can be checked before you sign.
This guide is written by a Nepal-based company, so read it with that in mind. The checks apply to any provider, including us.
What does Nepal offer compared with other outsourcing destinations?
A smaller, less crowded market than India or the Philippines, where your project is more likely to matter to the firm doing it. Nepal's software industry has grown around export work, universities produce graduates from programmes such as BSc CSIT, BCA and BE in Computer Engineering, and many engineers have years of experience with foreign clients.
The trade-offs are real. The senior talent pool is smaller, so niche specialists, for example in a particular ERP or legacy language, can be hard to find. Many experienced engineers move abroad, so ask how a firm keeps its people. And the time zone is unusual: the extra 45 minutes catches people out when they schedule calls.
How does Nepal's time zone overlap with yours?
Nepal is UTC+5:45 all year. Because most client countries change their clocks for daylight saving and Nepal does not, the gap shifts twice a year.
| Client location | Nepal is | Practical overlap |
|---|---|---|
| London | 4h45m ahead (BST), 5h45m ahead (GMT) | Nepal afternoon is UK morning |
| Berlin, Paris | 3h45m ahead (CEST), 4h45m ahead (CET) | Several shared hours every working day |
| Dubai | 1h45m ahead | Almost the full working day |
| Singapore | 2h15m behind | Almost the full working day |
| Sydney | 4h15m behind (AEST), 5h15m behind (AEDT) | Nepal morning is Sydney afternoon |
| New York | 9h45m ahead (EDT), 10h45m ahead (EST) | Nepal evening meets US morning; work continues overnight |
| San Francisco, Vancouver | 12h45m ahead (PDT), 13h45m ahead (PST) | Short early or late windows; mostly asynchronous |
Saturday is the official weekly holiday in Nepal. Firms serving foreign clients often align with a Monday-to-Friday week, but confirm it in writing. Plan around Dashain and Tihar, the biggest festivals, which usually fall between late September and November, when many teams take a week or more off. Our guide to working with an offshore team across time zones covers the routines that make the gap work in your favour.
What does it cost to outsource software development to Nepal?
Rates in Nepal are generally a fraction of US, UK or Australian agency rates, but they vary widely. As a rough market range, established Nepali firms commonly quote somewhere around USD 20 to 45 an hour for developers, with freelancers lower and senior specialists or architects higher. Treat any figure, this one included, as something to confirm with written quotes.
The hourly rate is only part of the cost. Add your own time for management and review, rework caused by unclear requirements, and ramp-up time for a new team. A slightly higher rate from a team that needs less supervision often costs less overall. How projects are actually priced is covered in custom software development cost.
What should you watch for when outsourcing to Nepal?
The same risks as with any offshore partner, most of which a clear contract and a short pilot will expose.
- Bait and switch. A senior engineer on the sales call, juniors on the project. Ask for the named team, their CVs and the right to interview them.
- Hidden subcontracting. Ask directly whether any work goes to freelancers or other firms, and require written consent for it in the contract.
- Code ownership. Repositories should sit in your GitHub, GitLab or Azure DevOps organisation from day one, with IP assigned to you on payment.
- Polite silence. Some teams hesitate to say "this will be late" or "this requirement is unclear". Ask for written risks and open questions in every weekly update, and welcome bad news delivered early.
- Key-person dependency. If one developer knows everything, you are exposed. Require documentation and code review by a second engineer.
- Infrastructure. Scheduled power cuts (load-shedding) largely ended in 2018, but outages still happen. Ask about backup power and a second internet connection.
- Security. Individual accounts with multi-factor authentication, least-privilege access, and no production data on laptops.
Contracts, IP and data protection
The contract should set the governing law, assign intellectual property in code and deliverables to you on payment, and cover confidentiality, data protection and exit terms, meaning handover of code, credentials and documentation within a set period.
Nepali laws that matter:
- Copyright Act 2059 (2002) protects computer programs; an explicit assignment in the contract removes doubt about who owns what the team writes.
- Electronic Transactions Act 2063 (2008) gives legal recognition to electronic records and digital signatures.
- Individual Privacy Act 2075 (2018) governs how personal information is handled in Nepal, including by your supplier's staff.
Your own laws still follow your data. Nepal does not have an EU adequacy decision, so transferring EU personal data to a Nepali supplier under the GDPR needs a transfer mechanism such as the Standard Contractual Clauses, and the UK has its own equivalents. Australian businesses should consider APP 8 on cross-border disclosure under the Privacy Act 1988. Our pages for clients in the USA, the UK and Australia cover each market's rules in more detail.
How to start: a paid pilot before a long contract
- Choose a real, self-contained piece of work that takes two to four weeks.
- Give the team access to your repository, ticketing system and a staging environment.
- Agree acceptance criteria and a demo at the end.
- Review the code yourself or with an engineer you trust: tests, readability, commit history.
- Judge communication as closely as output. Were questions asked early? Were risks written down?
- Only then commit to a larger scope or a longer engagement.
Which engagement model fits?
| Model | How it works | Fits when |
|---|---|---|
| Project | Defined scope, fixed price for the first milestone | You know what you need built |
| Retainer | A set number of days each month | Ongoing improvements and maintenance |
| Embedded | Engineers join your standups and work in your tools | You have product management and need more capacity |

How Meritbyte Technologies works with overseas clients
Meritbyte Technologies is a software, web and AI development company based in Nepal. We work remotely with clients in the USA, Australia, Canada, the UK, New Zealand, the UAE, Singapore and elsewhere, and have no offices outside Nepal.
Engagements begin with a free scoping conversation and a written scope, timeline and number. The first milestone is fixed-price; after that, work runs in two-week blocks with a demo at the end of each, and you can stop at the end of any block. You get one project manager, a written update every week and a staging URL. Code, repositories and credentials are in your name, and a person replies to enquiries within one business day. More detail is on our custom software development page.
Frequently asked questions
Is Nepal a good place to outsource software development?
It can be, particularly for companies in Europe, the Gulf and Australia that value shared working hours, and for North American companies comfortable with overnight handoffs. Rates are lower than in Western markets, and English is the working language of most firms that serve foreign clients. Judge a specific firm through references, a code review and a paid pilot, not the country alone.
How do I pay a software company in Nepal?
Pay the registered company, against its invoices, by international bank transfer to its business account in Nepal. Nepali firms receive foreign currency through their banks under Nepal Rastra Bank rules, so ask about their process and any bank charges before the first invoice. Avoid paying individuals' personal accounts for company work; it muddies the contract for both sides.
Can a Nepali team work US hours?
Partly. Nepal is 9 hours 45 minutes ahead of New York in the US summer, so the US morning falls in the Nepali evening. Many teams offer a daily overlap of two to three hours there and spend the rest of their day on focused work that is ready when the US team starts. Full US-hours coverage means night shifts, which few people can sustain.
What happens to my project during Dashain and Tihar?
Expect reduced capacity. Dashain and Tihar are Nepal's biggest festivals, usually falling between late September and November, and many engineers travel home for a week or more. Well-run firms publish their holiday calendar in advance, stagger leave and avoid scheduling launches in that window. Ask for the calendar before signing and plan releases around it.
